There are countless tips to be shared with first time kayakers, and even those who are experienced. There are so many different ways to kayak and so many tricks that one can continuously learn. Actually being out on the water and experiencing it for yourself is the best way to learn more! But even though there numerous tips, the top 3 are as follows.
1. DRESS FOR THE WATER, NOT THE WEATHER
Although appropriate clothing choices depend on the location, take into consideration the water temperature rather than the air temperature. If your kayak tips over, you’ll learn very quickly how important it is to plan for water temperature. Layers of quick-dry clothing are ideal, and hats, sunglasses and sunscreen are highly recommended. For footwear, wear sturdy, strap-on sandals or water shoes.
2. SELECT A BOAT APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR KAYAKING EXPERIENCE
Once you’ve chosen the right boat, you can easily paddle around whatever atmosphere you desire. Whether it is a short kayak for some white water rapids or a long kayak for some sea kayaking, choosing the right boat for your location is key for getting the best experience of your adventure.
3. KNOW HOW TO RESCUE YOURSELF AND OTHERS
Capsizing is unlikely on more calm water routes, but can still occur so it’s just best to be prepared. By having safety and rescue gear like life jackets, pumps (in case the kayak fills with water) and extra paddles, you’ll be set for a safe adventure. It is good to know how to re-enter the boat if you do capsize and also knowing how to help a buddy re-enter his or her kayak as well.
